AppZero today announced extension of its OS-free application virtualization technology to the desktop. First to market with technology that packages server applications as Virtual Application Appliances (VAAs) -- pre-installed, preconfigured applications that are ready to execute on a running operating system (OS) -- AppZero is the only tool available for decoupling server-side applications from operating systems.
This VAA approach permits applications to run on either physical or virtual machines, easily moved between datacenter and cloud infrastructures and back, without cloud lock-in. AppZero's VAA technology will now also be available as client-side virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) for Windows and Linux desktops.
Discussing the move, AppZero CEO, Greg O'Connor said, "Our core business and differentiator continues to be our ability to solve the complex challenges of server-side application virtualization and provisioning. AppZero remains the only technology for decoupling server-side applications from Windows and Linux operating systems. However, it makes sense to extend that capability to the relatively more simple task of desktop provisioning. In the desktop space, we anticipate interest in our ability to virtualize applications, but we are counting on low price to be both carrot and stick."
At the same time, the company announced a strategic partnership with Stoneware, Inc, an innovator of web-based datacenter delivery in the private cloud. Rick German, CEO of Stoneware, Inc. observed, "Our products allow organizations to completely rethink their client-side technology purchases as they move to web-based delivery of the data center. But we are realistic enough to know that even as our customers make the move to web-based delivery, the Windows desktop will not disappear. AppZero provides us with a cost-effective way of delivering Windows applications in a fluid computing environment."
O'Connor added, "Announcing our move to the desktop concurrent with the Stoneware partnership is a good sign of things to come, as well as quick validation for the technology."

InstallFree has now added support for virtualizing Office 2010, as well as the availability of a full virtualization recipe on our customer support portal. Here are some of the key benefits of using our virtualization technology with Office 2010:
We would like to thank all of our beta customers, as well as all of the InstallFree gang who have been using virtual Office 2010 on their production computers for many months now (of course, we wouldn’t have it any other way).
You can watch the video below to learn more about our support for virtualizing Office 2010.
InstallFree makes it easy to assign private OS environment configurations to virtual applications. This demo shows how you can have a virtual application use a specific screen resolution and map a private network drive.
Cameyo, the popular application virtualization provider, is launching a new platform for using and sharing free virtual applications, more easily than ever before.
The community platform, named Cameyo Online Library, is tightly integrated with Cameyo’s Online Packaging service. Every day, it automatically finds and adds free applications that can be safely used and shared. The library then leverages users’ feedback to filter out applications that do not virtualize properly. The packaged applications can be download and used very simply, while keeping one’s computer isolated and unaffected by these virtual applications.
Addressing the pain points of virtual applications:
Virtual applications, while extremely easy to deploy, use and remove, have two major drawbacks. First, they require time and efforts to build (“package”). Secondly, they are not guaranteed to function properly. Cameyo’s Online Library effectively solves these issues through innovative technology.
Cameyo’s Online Library automatically detects popular free applications. It then uses the Cameyo Online Packaging platform, and adds the resulting virtual packages into the library. Cameyo’s cloud servers automatically check for new updates for all of the library apps. The library grows automatically and gets bigger and bigger every day.
One important aspect of the Cameyo Online Library is the sharing of information and feedback among users. Users who encounter an application that misbehaves are encouraged to vote it out.
Cameyo's library is hosed on Microsoft Windows Azure cloud servers. No user signup, plugins nor pre-installed software is required for using Cameyo's virtual apps. Any user can use them from any Windows machine. Cameyo’s desktop client software makes it easier to find, download and manage virtual apps from the library, but it is not required. The large collection of free apps allows users to download, try, use, and if necessary remove apps in just a click. All without ever having to go through any installation process, hence keeping one’s computer clean, stable and safe.

Cameyo today announces availability of the world's first online virtual application packager, capable of building virtual applications online, without human intervention.
Packaging virtual applications (also called portable apps) used to be a tedious process, involving the preparation of a clean environment, preparation of system snapshots, installation of the software to package etc. Not anymore! Thanks to the new Cameyo Online platform, Internet users can simply submit applications and receive their virtual equivalent in return, in just a few minutes.
From now on, users can easily generate a portable version of almost any application, provided that it can be virtualized and supports silent installation mode.
Cameyo Online works using a combination of intelligent installer recognition, installation analysis, and virtual cloud infrastructure.
"We're aware that the online packager is not perfect yet, nor does it work for 100% of applications, but we do believe this is a very big step in this field", says author Cameyoco.
Once packaged, users receive an email allowing them to download and use the application in different modes, depending on how much isolation they want between the application and the underlying system. Users can even edit their virtual app online, and hence customize their app's basic settings. More advanced configuration can be made using the regular Cameyo client.
Cameyo Online packager is available for free on online.cameyo.com.
