Microsoft released an updated VDI, VDA and RDS Licensing Frequently Asked Questions

Alexander Ervik Johnsen Hyper-V, Microsoft, RDS, RDS FAQ, RemoteFX, VDA and RDS Licensing Frequently Asked Questions, VDA FAQ, VDI, VDI FAQ, virtual desktops, Windows Server 2008 R2 2012-04-13

Microsoft has released a updated FAQ document on their licensing of Windows 7, Windows 2008 R2, Hyper-V and RemoteFX for use with Virtual Desktops (VDI) and VDA. There are not much new surprises, but it clarifies the use of Windows Server licenses as desktops, as well as Service Provider options and issues around Client Hypervisor’s.

Specific highlights include:

  • Limitations surounding the use of a Windows retail license for VDI
  • Licenses you need for use of Windows Server for VDI
  • Extended Roaming Rights
  • Type 1 hypervisors with Windows clients ala Citrix XenClient
  • The FAQ also talkes about how Citrix enhances the core Microsoft products
