Wyse Delivers Lowest Cost Desktop Virtualization for Education with Shared Resource Computing Implementation at San Francisco Public School
Wyse Technology, the global leader in cloud client computing, announced today that Alvarado Elementary School in San Francisco, California has deployed the combined solution of Wyse zero clients with Windows MultiPoint Server 2010.
“Alvarado is an ideal setting for our Wyse E01 low-cost desktop virtualization solution”
Windows MultiPoint Server 2010 enables multiple students to simultaneously share one computer, and enables educational institutions to provide more teachers and students with access to technology. The product helps lower up-front hardware acquisition and ongoing operational costs, reduce power consumption, and reduce IT management complexity.
The solution uses the new Wyse E01 zero clients that have been specifically designed to work with Windows MultiPoint Server 2010. At under $99 per unit, the E01 offers a truly low-cost PC for each student through an innovative hardware design. Teachers simply connect multiple Wyse E01 devices to a PC running Windows MultiPoint Server 2010, and each student’s individual desktop is up and running in a matter of minutes.
Wyse E01 is the only zero client capable of supporting USB peripherals such as specialized pointing devices, smart boards, Webcams, and USB flash drives in conjunction with Windows MultiPoint Server 2010. This provides students and teachers with a Windows 7 desktop experience and limitless possibilities in learning.
“We have been working toward the goal of one-to-one computing, but purchasing a PC for each student was not only cost prohibitive but impossible for the school to maintain,” according to Alvarado Elementary School PTA member Tom Rainey. “After trying other solutions, we selected Windows MultiPoint Server 2010 in conjunction with the E01 zero clients from Wyse. The combination gives us the economics and energy savings of shared computing, while also providing us with the assurance of working with two very sophisticated organizations.”
Alvarado Elementary is a K-5 Spanish/English dual-immersion school based in San Francisco’s Noe Valley neighborhood. The school boasts well-regarded Arts and Science programs. Through its PTA Technology Committee, Alvarado is rolling out the Wyse solution in each classroom as budget allows, having already deployed ten classrooms and with 10 more to go. Each classroom will be equipped with one PC and four student workstations in order to augment teacher curriculum.
“Alvarado is an ideal setting for our Wyse E01 low-cost desktop virtualization solution,” according to Param Desai, Director, Product Management at Wyse Technology. “By sharing a single computer with multiple students in each classroom, teachers are benefiting from the latest hardware and software with access to state-of-the-art multimedia content, while also simplifying IT administration.”
“We’re passionate about increasing access to technology so more students have an environment in which to learn and thrive,” said Chris Phillips, general manager at Microsoft Corp. “When we rolled out Windows MultiPoint Server 2010, it was with schools such as Alvarado in mind. As a result, the school can greatly reduce IT support issues while making sure teachers have access to reliable technology that is easy to use and tailored to their needs. Students benefit from the latest Windows experience and educational resources.”
