XenDesktop Virtual Desktop Diary Day 2 and 3

Alexander Ervik Johnsen Citrix, Desktop Virtualization, VDI, XenDesktop, XenDesktop pros and cons 2011-12-14

Okay, since this VDI stuff from Citrix actually work, no kidding, but yeah, it really does work. That’s why I did not do a blog post yesterday about it! It’s actually darn right stable, works like a charm and all that. I did install some small bits of Software yesterday. Since I travel alot around doing presentations, I installed the Powerpoint 2010 viewer, so that all my presso’s this week will be done via the XenDesktop machine.

Okay, so apart from what people report back about VDI and IOPS, I don’t have that problem, since it’s not a big solution, but when it works, it works! HD video works great, and it’s actually better from the Windows 7 machine that XenDesktop delivers than on my laptop, at least with Firefox on my local machine, it’s slow, or caches slowly.

I’ve basically been accessing my Virtual Alex Desktop the last 3 days, from my laptop, a IGEL UD5 Thin Client,a MAC and from my iPad. Tomorrow I’ll give it a go on the XenClient 2.1 and on Samsung Galaxy Tab, just to do a broad test.

It’s also accessed via Citrix Access Gateway VPX, now that being said, I’m actually kinda pissed off about the problems around the latest CAG VPX release and the latest Citrix Receiver. It does not want to play like the earlier versions! But, this is not a rant about stuff that don’t work! I would have told you something negative, but after 3 days, I actually have good positiv vibes about the user experience.

Also, I saw the XenDesktop 5.5 vs VMware View 5 stuff on the web today, now, I have not been a user of View before, but I can actually try to do a similar test sometime in the future.

Tomorrow, I’ll integrate the ShareFile client, GoToMeeting client and some other good stuff.
I’m also doing some development on the Android platform at the moment, and I’ll maybe install Eclipse on it as well…
