Nutanix Improves Datacentre Efficiency for India’s Leading Cable Manufacturer
Nutanix has announced that Polycab Improves Performance by 70 percent, and halves Licensing Overhead with Enterprise Cloud Platform from Nutanix.
Polycab Wires, one of India’s fastest growing companies and leading cable manufacturer, has deployed the Nutanix enterprise cloud solution. The manufacturer, with 22 percent market share and annual revenues of over US$1 billion, is set to deliver its digital transformation plan.
Since deploying the Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform eight months ago, Polycab has already seen a 45 percent return on its initial investment, driven by the 50 percent reduction of its Microsoft SQL Server licensing overhead and the 70 percent boost in database and application performance. This greater efficiency is particularly evident when running a business critical design application, which now completes the process in under three minutes compared to over 15 minutes using the legacy infrastructure – significantly enhancing engineering productivity.
Polycab needed a more scalable and easy to manage platform for existing applications to deliver flexible and on-demand IT services to users across the business. A decision was made to migrate from the legacy SAN-based datacentre architecture to hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) running AHV from Nutanix as it was found to be the best suited for the company’s immediate need to increase efficiency and long-term need to have the scalability to grow at any speed.
In particular, the team was impressed by the Nutanix AHV, enabling virtual machines to be deployed and managed from the same Prism management console as physical compute and storage resources. Nutanix AHV is built on proven open-source KVM technology and is shipped at no additional cost with every Nutanix deployment.
“In addition to the value of consolidating applications and delivering higher performance, another significant benefit is that the solution comes with its own hypervisor,” explained CIO of Polycab Wires, Udit Pahwa. “Having Nutanix AHV integrated as part of the platform allows us to manage all of our resources together as well as saving money which would otherwise have gone on software licensing. It also eliminates the need to have a standalone virtualisation solution.”
“A single management interface from one vendor instantly made our systems easier to manage,” said Deputy IT manager, Hasan Ali. “In addition, the Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform performs intelligent self-monitoring; identifying and fixing problems on its own without any downtime or Administrator intervention.”
By consolidating disparate servers and associated NetApp storage arrays the company has also saved considerably on datacentre space. This has led to a reduction in power and cooling, decreasing the use and associated cost of these resources by an estimated 60 percent.
The initial setup and installation took only a few hours, after which the Polycab team was able to virtualise physical hosts running critical SQL Server data-bases and associated applications, consolidating them together on the Nutanix solution with minimal disruption.
“Beyond the higher datacentre efficiency, the Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform has also driven greater productivity amongst the internal IT team, empowering Polycab’s staff to focus on the applications that power the business rather than time-consuming maintenance and management,” said Sunil Mahale, Vice President of Sales of Nutanix India. “We are committed to making infrastructure invisible, that just works to deliver high performance capabilities, so customers can take the most advantage of the cloud-like, ease of use experience, while maintaining the control and security of owning their on-premise datacentre.”
Looking forward, Polycab Wires also has big plans to build a business portal and sees the Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform as the ideal platform for that project, especially using the rich management functionality available today.
