Enterprises and Service Providers Reap the Benefits of Flash Storage Performance for Cloud Services

Violin Memory, a player in the all flash storage platform solutions space, has announced the general availability of a driver supporting OpenStack Block Storage (Cinder) that will give enterprise businesses and service providers the ability to leverage Violin’s Flash Storage Platform™ (FSP) in private and public cloud computing environments.

The Cinder driver supports the OpenStack Juno release for infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and integrates with Violin’s Concerto™ OS 7 operating system designed to deliver expanded flash storage performance and management simplicity for customers deploying cloud services on an OpenStack platform.

Violin also announces certification with Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform. This certification ensures that Violin’s FSP has been tested and is supported for use with this commercial distribution to provide consistent performance and compatibility.

“To help customers get the most out of their OpenStack and hybrid cloud deployments, Red Hat works closely with technology companies like Violin Memory that provide powerful and complementary solutions. We are pleased that through this certification, customers can deploy their Flash Storage Platform as part of their OpenStack infrastructure with confidence,” said Mike Werner, senior director, Global Ecosystems, Red Hat.

OpenStack has rapidly become a leading platform on which to build private and public cloud computing environments that support Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). Cinder is the infrastructure service for managing block-based storage in the OpenStack framework. Violin’s Cinder Driver for Concerto OS 7 integrates directly with OpenStack-based private and public clouds via its sophisticated REST API, delivering a highly agile platform that supports developer operations, with support for all required OpenStack Juno Cinder APIs. The driver comes with every Flash Storage Platform at no additional cost and is fully documented to simplify deployment, installation, configuration, and troubleshooting.

“Being compatible with OpenStack and Red Hat is key to servicing and supporting our growing customer base of cloud service providers and enterprises deploying private clouds,” said Sudhir Prasad, senior director, product management at Violin Memory. “With a driver that supports the defacto standard OpenStack platform, cloud service providers can leverage the high-performance capabilities of Violin’s Flash Storage Platform and Concerto OS 7 in their environments.”

Violin Memory plans to certify its Cinder driver with OpenStack distributions and continue its contributions to the community within the upstream OpenStack Liberty code base.
