Citrix gets cloud management tech with the acquisition of ScaleXtreme. Citrix has acquired ScaleXtreme, a San Mateo based company with innovative technology to manage the lifecycle of enterprise applications and infrastructure across virtualization and cloud environments, to accelerate deliver of services automation capabilities within Workspace Services. 

Citrix Workspace Services accelerates the creation and delivery of mobile workspaces by automating the setup, configuration, and on-going management of Citrix products on any cloud or on premise infrastructure. Partners and enterprises can leverage standardized expert-defined deployment architecture blueprints for Citrix workloads or build their own, and easily deploy these blueprints on any cloud or virtualization infrastructure through the automated provisioning capabilities of Citrix Workspace Services. The solution automates on-going management of those applications post-deployment with key features such as auto-scaling and auto-recovery.

Citrix decided to buy ScaleXtreme “to accelerate delivery of services automation capabilities within Workspace Services,” according to the Citrix blog post. Citrix announced Workspace Services yesterday as a tool for securely making applications and data available to employees on any device they choose.

Competitors in the cloud management market include RightScale, Dell’s Enstratius, Cliqr, Scalr, and ServiceMesh. Citrix has not said anything about the terms of the deal. ScaleXtreme was started in 2010 and is based in San Mateo, Calif. It raised an $11 million round from Ignition Partners and Accel Partners back in 2011.
