Expect a Citrix Receiver for iPad soon
Citrix is a planning to roll out an iPad specific version of its virtualization application, Harry Labana, chief technologist in Citrix’s desktop division, says the iPhone version has already reached 200,000 downloads. “We already have a receiver for the iPhone, Android, Windows, Linux,” he says. “So this is just a natural extension.”
He sees opportunity for sales of the iPad in areas such as medicine. For example, doctors who want to view patient records or X-ray images can do so from a device like the iPad that connects remotely to another computer where patient files are stored. “Not everyone who spends their work day walking around needs a full-power laptop or a PC to read certain data or to send mail,” he says.
Chris Fleck,Vice President of Community and Solutions Development at Citrix says that it turns out the 9.7 inch display on the iPad with a 1024×768 screen resolution works great for a full VDI XenDesktop. Windows applications run unmodified and securely in the data center, and even multiple applications at once. The advancements that were made for the Citrix Receiver for iPhone will carry over to the iPad, however the iPhone restrictions of screen size and small keyboards are overcome with the iPad. It’s a beautiful thing ! The iPad looks to be an ideal end point device that can empower users to be productive were ever they are and IT will be able to safely deliver company hosted virtual desktops and apps without worry.
