Citrix Hypervisor ( XenServer )

ExtremeXOS Network Virtualization with Citrix XenServer

Alexander Ervik Johnsen Citrix, Extreme Networks, ExtremeXOS, Network Virtualization, Whitepaper, XenMotion, XenServer, XenServer Pool 2012-09-25

Citrix Systems, with its XenServer platform, is a leader in virtualization technology. Through the XenMotion feature, Virtual Machines (VMs) can move among Citrix-virtualized servers on the network. The whitepaper from Extreme Networks describes the steps required to setup a Citrix XenServer Pool (basic arrangement, two servers strong). Additionally, instructions are provided for setting up the infrastructure required for XenMotion, including a Citrix License Server and iSCSI Storage Repository. These initial steps are then leveraged by the Extreme Networks infrastructure to deploy the ExtremeXOS Network Virtualization (XNV) solution.

Extreme XOS

ExtremeXOS is designed from the ground up to provide the robust performance and capabilities needed for everything from large cloud and data center applications to intelligent, converged enterprise edge networks. Modular architecture, deeply integrated identity aware security, ready integration with VOIP systems as well as control and automation features for highly virtualized data centers are key features of ExtremeXOS.

  • Resilient– modular architecture, memory protected, self healing, resilient protocols (EAPS, MLAG, DCB)
  • Virtualized– XNV™ VM lifecycle management at the network level, identity aware VDI provisioning
  • Automated– fully scriptable with flexible APIs
  • Proven– 8+ years in the field,10+ years in development, millions of ports shipped
  • Secure– Common Criteria EAL3+ Certified

Virtualization – XNV™ (ExtremeXOS Network Virtualization), helps provide VM awareness, control and automation for cloud and other virtualized data centers. Identity Manager helps provision and manage VDI, aiding desktop virtualization efforts.

With mobility comes a need for enhanced management, security and visibility of the VMs for the network administrator. XNV integrates the network management system with the server virtualization management platform to ensure visibility and synchronization between the virtualization environment and the network. The XNV solution does not require you to modify the Citrix XenServer environment nor the server-operating environment, thus a full XNV deployment “how to” will be captured in this guide.
