Nutanix reference architecture for deploying Citrix XenDesktop

Alexander Ervik Johnsen Citrix, Cloud, Nutanix, Virtualization, XenDesktop 2014-01-20

Nutanix, a leading provider of hyper-efficient, massively scalable and elegantly simple datacenter infrastructure solutions, today announced that it has been verified as Citrix Ready. The Citrix Ready program helps customers identify third-party solutions that are recommended to enhance virtualization, networking and cloud computing solutions from Citrix. As part of the program, Nutanix has completed a rigorous process to ensure its Virtual Computing Platform is compatible with Citrix XenDesktop®. The Nutanix Virtual Computing Platform is a great addition to this program as it offers Citrix XenDesktop customers a flexible, simple and affordable solution to achieve massive scale

Nutanix offers a next-generation converged infrastructure for virtual workloads that consolidates the compute (server) and storage tiers into a single, integrated platform. Using the same design principles and technologies that power IT innovators such as Google, Facebook and Amazon, Nutanix’s modular design helps to radically simplify traditional datacenter infrastructures.

Reference Architecture for Deploying Citrix XenDesktop

Nutanix has also published a Reference Architecture (available here) that details what is required to build a complete, enterprise-scale XenDesktop delivery infrastructure leveraging the Nutanix Virtual Computing Platform.  Specifically, the Reference Architecture provides a comprehensive, technical blueprint with recommended design, performance and configuration information for organizations looking to deploy as few as a couple hundred virtual desktops, or for large enterprises that need to run more than 20,000 virtual desktops using Citrix XenDesktop.

The Reference Architecture provides detailed performance data for a variety of XenDesktop configurations, including those leveraging Machine Created Services (MCS) and Provisioning Services (PVS). Thorough testing, using industry-standard benchmarking tool Login VSI, demonstrated that a single Nutanix 2U appliance provides all of the server compute and storage resources necessary to deliver XenDesktop services to up to 400 task workers or up to 360 knowledge workers – completely eliminating the need for centralized SAN-based storage systems.
