Lumension Partners With Citrix To Advance Desktop Virtualization Security

Alexander Ervik Johnsen Citrix, Lumension, Virtual Desktop, XenApp, XenDesktop 2010-03-30

Lumension, a global leader in endpoint management and security, today announced it has forged a new partnership with Citrix Systems, a leading provider of virtualization, networking and cloud computing technologies, to extend its leading-edge Lumension® Endpoint Integrity Service (EIS)to Citrix customers. As insecure applications and software plaguing organizations with newly introduced vulnerabilities, the new partnership will allow Citrix users to validate endpoint software integrity by definitively identifying compromised or unapproved software before being deployed in Citrix desktop virtualization environments to further eliminate risks.

The collaboration between Lumension and Citrix will empower users to gain access to Lumension’s in-depth, comprehensive library of digital signatures and applications to ensure customers are fully protected to handle the rapidly changing landscape as well as use the Lumension EIS within a Citrix XenDesktop® or XenApp™ environment. Further, Citrix will join a powerful community that includes Microsoft to contribute its hash metadata into Lumension’s EIS repository, which is consistent with Lumension’s method of received application hashes directly from the software publisher to ensure provenance, and that the application is being delivered from a trusted source.

Lumension EIS is a cloud-based service that enables Internet Service Vendors (ISVs) to determine software integrity and authenticity by providing software validation to endpoint security products and solutions. Lumension EIS is designed to support a wide range of advance security solutions such as software policy compliance, application whitelist audit and enforcement, security configuration validation and drift avoidance, software license and security management as well as change control process enforcement. Additionally, Lumension EIS includes the following:

  • Provides key information necessary to validate the integrity of software for both operating systems and applications running on endpoints (servers, desktops, laptops, and virtual machines).
  • Leverages relational intelligence from Lumension’s industry-leading security content database (which includes security configuration, vulnerability and patch management information, and over 2500 harmonized controls across 400 regulatory compliance requirements), to facilitate truly seamless updates within highly secure (“locked down” or “whitelist enforced”) IT system environments.

“While desktop virtualization enables tremendous levels of business agility, it doesn’t eliminate the security risks posed by hackers and malware,” said Rich Hlavka, senior vice president of business development for Lumension. “This partnership with Citrix provides its customers the added security blanket they need in today’s dynamic threat environment to stop any unknown applications or software from executing, and only allowing trusted ones to run. As one of the first vendors to the market our comprehensive endpoint integrity service, Lumension is proud to be able to offer a more sophisticated approach to application whitelisting and trusted change management for Citrix users by verifying that all applications are in pristine condition. We believe this service will be critical and foundational to every organization’s security program – in ensuring software and applications are up-to-date with all relevant patches from vendors before deploying them in their environments.”

“As a key player in the virtualization space, the collaboration with Lumension will help Citrix ensure optimal virtual desktop and application performance while increasing security and compliance across the board,” said Kurt Roemer, chief security strategist, Citrix. “Further, the participation with the Lumension EIS will help customers build more trust in virtualized environments while at the same time ensure that their operating systems are fully protected with an application control-based approach. Contributing metadata in the Lumension’s EIS repository will allow for a centralized trusted source.”
