Oracle has bought GreenBytes

Oracle announced it has agreed to acquire GreenBytes, a provider of ZFS technology with domain expertise in the areas of deduplication, replication, and virtualization. GreenBytes’ technology complements Oracle’s storage solutions and is expected to enhance Oracle’s ZFS Storage Appliances.

GreenBytes VDI software is based on ZFS and includes its own, highly rated deduplication engine and replication. It can run on flash hardware and, originally, GreenBytes sold a VDI flash appliance. With this deal Oracle is said to merge GreenBytes’ technology ” so that they we can expected that it will enhance Oracle’s ZFS Storage Appliances. That could mean the ZFS appliance getting GreenBytes’ deduplication engine. Oracle said it “is currently reviewing the existing GreenBytes product roadmap” and will be providing guidance to customers at some point.

According to Oracle they are currently reviewing the existing GreenBytes product roadmap and will be providing guidance to customers in accordance with Oracle’s standard product communication policies.

The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2014.
