FrontRange Solutions launches Discovery 9

Alexander Ervik Johnsen App-v 4.5, Discovery 9, ESX, FrontRange, Hyper-V, Microsoft, ThinApp, virtual assets, Virtual Machine, VM, VMware 2010-02-08

“Swiss Army knife” approach enables organizations achieve expected cost savings and increased efficiency through 100% network visibility

FrontRange Solutions, the developer of Service and Infrastructure Management software for mid-sized and distributed enterprises today announces the launch of FrontRange Discovery™ 9, the all-in-one solution for finding and tracking all physical and virtual IT assets across the corporate network.

FrontRange Discovery 9 enables a multi-faceted approach to network management. The latest version of the long-standing solution, introduces the ability to automatically detect and then audit virtual assets, including servers, desktops and applications, as well as applications published on thin client servers. Such capabilities will ensure organizations remain compliant, bringing considerable cost savings and increased productivity.

“Virtualization is one of the hottest trends across organizations today; yet many fail to realize expected cost savings and efficiency gains as they struggle to effectively manage their virtual assets,” says Kevin J Smith, Vice President Products at FrontRange Solutions, who explains the importance of tracking virtual hardware and software.  “Lack of full visibility of a company’s network can lead to a sprawl of hardware devices and can even result in serious software license infringements. FrontRange Discovery 9 truly is the Swiss Army knife of the SAM world, due to its multiple abilities, but from just one resource. Even with a huge buzz around SaaS and Cloud Computing, the simple fact is that organizations still have huge investments in physical infrastructure that needs to be managed effectively if costs are not to run out of control. It is the most effective tool to help organizations retain control of their networks, minimizing risks and maximizing the opportunity to save costs.”

For organizations currently deploying virtualized hardware, FrontRange Discovery 9 supports VMware® ESX 3.5, VMware Virtual Server 2.0 VMware Workstation 6.5 and Microsoft® Hyper-V (Windows 2008).   For each of the above technologies, FrontRange Discovery will determine Guest/Host relationships[1] and audit Physical CPU cores on host, CPU speed, physical memory on host, PCI devices, system model, BIOS, vendor ESX version & build number.

FrontRange Discovery also audits virtual applications published using Microsoft App-V 4.5 and VMware ThinApp 4.0.

In addition to tracking virtual IT assets, FrontRange Discovery 9 also introduces the ability to audit thin client applications published using Citrix® XenApp 4.5 and 5.0 (Advanced, Enterprise and Platinum editions) servers.

FrontRange Discovery 9 is available on general release from February 8th 2010.  Existing customers with a valid support and maintenance contract can upgrade at no additional cost.  For more information, please visit www.frontrange.com/discovery9.
